Cage nuts provide a simple method of attaching a female thread form to sheet steel applications, they are quick and easy to assemble by hand and eliminate the need for welding or clinching. The identifying characteristic of a cage nut is a metal cage with two wings that encompasses a free floating square nut. The wings on the cage are designed to hold the nut firmly in place when it is inserted into square hole. When pressed together the wings hold the nut fixed in position allowing the bolt to be threaded, while at the same time keeping the nut loose, just enough to allow for some minor adjustments. Cage nuts can are easily installed and just as easily replaced, they prevent thread damage which may occur when using the bolt directly without the nut.

Cage nuts are most commonly used in data rack frames for mounting various equipment modules, however they can also be found in electrical equipment, lighting systems, audio setups, etc. Sometimes cage nuts may go by different names, such as clip nuts, grip nuts, retainer nuts, floating nuts or rack nuts.
